Hello Again Everyone, this is Debbi updating for Gary until he can do it himself.
We arrived to the hospital on Wednesday morning around 6:00am. They admitted him to pre-op; they did some blood work, gave him an epidural (he was not to thrilled with it) and surgical prep. Dr. Burrows, showed up clean and wide awake and confident with doing this surgery. He said the surgery would take about 8 hours or so. Around 7:45am they finally moved him to the OR Dr. Burrows made his first incision at 8:06am which started a long day of worry and waiting.
Around 6:00pm, after nearly 9 hours of waiting, a very exhausted Dr. Burrows, showed up in the waiting area to tell me the surgery was very successful with no surprises, the tumor has been removed; a biopsy taken of surrounding tissue was negative of caner and affected lymph nodes were removed, as well **** GARY IS TOTALLY CANCER FREE****. Unfortunately, the wait for two hour before I could see him was almost as bad as the 9 hours of waiting for the surgery to be done. Finally, at 8:00pm I was able to see for myself that we was ok. He was still sleepy and out of it a bit but alert and in a lot of pain. But considering what he had just went through he looked pretty good to me.
At this point it was a wait for a room. They finally got a room for him about 11:30pm and he was at this point feeling a lot of pain everywhere, which was to be expected. He continued to have pain through the night, neither one of us got much rest, then they finally adjusted his medications to give him some relief.
That's been pretty much all that happened up til today which is Friday. He gave us all a scare including Dr. Burrows. His Oxygen level decided to drop to a alarming low level. At first Dr. Burrows was afraid he was going to need interbate Gary and put him on a ventilator to assist with getting him the amount of oxygen he needs, along with that they would have put him in a medicine induced coma....which had us all worried. But, once again, Dr. Burrows brilliantly saved Gary from having to go through that and decided to treat him for a couple things that could possibly be causing the problem....gave him antibiotics in case he's having pre-pneumonia, blood thinner in case a pulmonary blood clot or it could have been possibly mucus blocking his airway. After Dr. Burrows treated him with medications, Gary's oxygen level starting moving up to a stable level and was breathing on his own. Unfortunately this evening we had another spell and his oxygen level started dropping again, but they are doing everything to keep from having to interbate him and put him one temporary life support.
He's sitting up in a chair and I'm watching over him as I update his blog and he's looks really good except for the many tubes, hoses, lines that are coming out of every Orpheus's of his body. The worse so far besides having problems with oxygen levels is that he cannot eat or drink....NOTHING can pass his lips for 10 days because, his new plumbing made by Dr. Burrows needs to heal without leaks.
It's going to be a long hard recovery for him, but he's been a strong one through this entire thing he will make it and be back to life as normal very soon, but until then I will make sure he is well taken care of.
Right now Gary's oxygen level is PERFECT ~ he's dosing in and out but doing good.
I want to end this update by thanking everyone that kept Gary in their hearts and thoughts and supported him through this really unfortunate time of his life. I know by the support been a tremendous impact on his beating this nasty disease.
I'll update again very soon
